A Perfect Gift: Me
A gift box made to sit within the V&A’s snuff box collection, playfully making fun of the importance we give to historical figures and their own self importance. The brief of the project was exploring object to object relations. How an object added to a collection changes the perception of the collection.
This object is presented as a gift, the outside box conceals the object, which is a gold box. It is decorated with the gift giver’s face and other representations influenced by the myth of narcissus, mimicking the representations of Greek mythology in the collection. The collection itself showcases gold boxes, owned and collected by important historical figures, used as diplomatic gifts to cement power and alliances. The object highlights the self-aggrandizing nature of giving an object where the center point is yourself and your qualities. As well as examining the importance we give to historical figures versus ordinary people.
